Empathy Is Destroying The West

The NYU student and Spain's Invasion

Nick Shirley went to NY where he did street interviews. You just need to watch this before we do anything else.

My goodness. I posted this clip this morning and it hit 1 million views before noon. Will probably clear 2 million. That’s because the clip encompasses the entire modern Liberal ideology. All packed into a single minute.

There’s a lot going on here.

The NYU student sits down with Nick Shirley and calmly explains why she would prefer her own rapist remain free on the streets. She casually explains she does not want him locked up. Here is the exchange, almost word for word:

Shirley: “Let’s just say somebody who has raped a woman.”

NYU Student: “Totally.”

Shirley: “Would you like them to be out in the street?”

NYU Student: “I think my answer is yes. Even though that’s a challenging answer to say.”

Shirley: “So if you got raped, would you like your rapist to be out in the street?”

NYU Student: “Well, let me finish, because I have been raped and they are out in the street, and I’m not sure them going to jail is a solution to whatever’s going on inside their heart or even my own heart that contributed to that experience that I’m having. And I don’t want more people to get raped, but I don’t know for certain that going into a jail in the United States is going to shift anything inside of their operating system so that they’ll make a different choice again.”

She ends with a mystical flourish: “Just free yourself from the prison in your heart.”

We all have to understand she is not an outlier. There are millions of copies of her across the United States. This is why people like Mamdani get elected. She represents the logical endpoint of a moral operating system that has captured our institutions, universities, media, and large parts of the elite class.

Liberalism is a toxic virus of unbounded empathy that dissolves the basic protective instincts required for any civilization to survive.

The moral heatmap explains…everything

There is a famous set of heat maps from psychological research on the “moral circle.” Many of you are already familiar with this.

Participants were asked to allocate their moral concern across expanding rings: immediate family, extended family, close friends, acquaintances, people in your country, all humans, all mammals, all living things, rocks, the universe itself.

Conservatives concentrate their concern heavily on the inner rings—family, friends, community, nation. Liberals spread it outward. In the viral versions of these heat maps, the liberal pattern is inverted: heavier coloring on distant strangers, animals, even abstract categories, with comparatively less intensity on the people who actually share their blood, home, and daily life.

Liberals are conditioned to feel more visceral distress over the suffering of distant or abstract others than over the concrete safety of their own children, partners, or neighbors. At least that’s what the science says.

Single-variable thinking and the death of trade-offs

People high in this style of empathy tend to fixate on one variable and ignore the rest. In this NYU student’s case, the single variable is “whatever’s going on inside their heart”, or, in other words, the perpetrator. Because he himself must be a victim of society if he became a rapist. Prison, in her view, will not reprogram the rapist’s soul. Therefore prison is out of the question.

She never seriously weighs the other variables:

• Deterrence for other potential offenders

• Incapacitation so the man cannot rape again tomorrow

• The message society sends about the value of women’s bodily integrity and, of course, safety

• The cumulative effect when thousands of such decisions are made

Either she never thinks about any of these other outcomes, or she has but cares more about the perpetrator than anything else.

Whatever it is, it lacks moral reasoning and logic. It’s out-of-control empathy. Suiciddal empathy, as Gad Saad says.

This same problem appears everywhere liberal ideology runs free:

• criminal justice reform that prioritizes the offender over the safety of the victim

• open-borders that prioritize the accommodation of illegals—many with criminal backgrounds—over native women and children

• educational policies that elevate the disruptive student above the learning of the rest of the class

When empathy becomes the sole metric, logic collapses every time guaranteed. Trade-offs disappear, and reality is required to rearrange itself around feelings.

Chaos is the predictable result

Allow this ideology to run rampant and you get exactly what we are seeing. Soft-on-crime policies in major cities produce measurable increases in robbery, assault, and sexual violence. The people who suffer most are rarely the affluent progressives who carry heavy influence. The people who actually suffer are the working-class and minority communities forced to live with the consequences.

The same empathy that refuses to imprison a rapist because “jail won’t fix his heart” will also refuse to deport criminals, refuse to enforce basic public order, and refuse to prioritize the native population’s cohesion over abstract global justice.

That’s why Spain is currently being invaded.

One invader even admitted he was fleeing his home country because he is linked to a murder case.

The same ideology that has captured the NYU student’s mind is the same one that created the conditions where thousands of Moroccan migrants feel permission to invade Spain. They know they will be set up with housing, food, and prey on the vulnerable women and children whose leaders have betrayed them.

The West cannot survive on infinite compassion. That’s why Liberalism is so dangerous. It has inverted compassion for millions around the world. We need to have the strongest empathy and compassion toward those closest to us and our country and less as we move outward in the circles of morality. Society begins to fall as soon as the people with inverted compassion and empathy take power.

The clip went viral for a reason. It is a pure case study of the virus. Too much of this empathy without judgment and consequence will not produce a kinder world as the NYU student and politicians in Spain and throughout the West imagine.

It will produce a more chaotic, more dangerous, and ultimately less free one.

Empathy, in the form currently celebrated by the modern liberal mind, might destroy the West.

I fear it’s already too late.
